ABOUT
Founded in 2003 by Artistic Director Ruben Valenzuela, Bach Collegium San Diego (BCSD) has become one of the nation’s premier early music ensembles, recognized for its vibrant and historically informed performances. Now in its 23rd season, BCSD has earned acclaim for its expressive artistry and innovative programming. In 2021, BCSD gained national attention with El Mesías: Messiah for a New World, featuring a newly commissioned Spanish libretto of Handel’s Messiah which they are set to record in 2025 under the label Bright Shiny Things. This project has brought renewed relevance to this beloved oratorio, highlighting themes of cultural identity and accessibility. The ensemble made its European debut at the Paulinum during Bachfest Leipzig 2024, with additional performances at historic Bach sites throughout Thuringia, Germany. BCSD’s recent debut recording, A Sonic Youth (Bright Shiny Things), pairs Bach’s Christ lag in Todesbanden (BWV 4) with Handel’s Dixit Dominus (HWV 232), and has been praised for its clarity and vitality. Looking ahead, the ensemble is exploring touring El Mesías in the U.S. and abroad, and plans to return to Bachfest Leipzig in 2027.
