WHEN IN ROME
Music of A. Scarlatti, Corelli, and Handel

Handel's arrival in Rome in 1706 had a profound influence on his development as a composer, igniting one of the most creative periods of his career. In Rome, Handel rubbed shoulders with the greatest musicians of the age while basking in the luxuries, excesses, and patronage of the clerical aristocracy. When in Rome brings together seductive and euphoric music of this time and place.

G.F. HANDEL: MESSIAH HWV 56

Handel’s great oratorio Messiah springs to life by way of the fruitful collaboration of Charles Jennens’ carefully conceived libretto and Handel’s supreme skill as a composer  of the theatre. BCSD’s performance of Messiah, delivered by a dynamic cast in the manner of Handel’s dramatic operas, has become one of its crown jewels.

FAR ABOVE THE SKIES
Music of Telemann, Bach, and the Gospel Tradition

Throughout history, music has provided comfort in countless and diverse ways during times of grief and loss. Far Beyond the Skies brings together two venerable traditions, on the one hand two extraordinary works from the German Lutheran tradition which meditate on the release of death and the joys that await, and on the other hand funeral music from the Gospel tradition and where and how these two worlds intersect.
